Change the Negative Stigma of the Black Community

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.”- MLK

Start the conversation about mental health with those close to you. There is a negative stigma around mental health in the Black community and we are often told to be strong. We need know that we were conditioned to think this way and need to realize that we deserve help. Even though others may be hesitant to talk about mental health with you, stay persistent and figure out creative ways of mentioning the words “mental health”. Embrace that your mental health is important and don't give up on the topic even if you feel discouraged at times.

Show compassion to those around you who may be struggling. Being present and showing your compassion will could potentially encourage that person to get help or talk to someone about their struggles. Try to be an active listener if you can and validate their emotions. This may help them feel comfortable opening up to you more and others. Showing compassion increases the level of trust and communication in any relationship.

Embrace your voice in the black community and other spaces. Promote the creative and intelligent excellence in the community to others. This can help to refute stereotypes and get more people to promote solidarity sharing experiences that go against the character types "made" for Black people. We are at our best when using human connection and connectivity.=
