How to Empower Black Youth

1. Let them know they are loved and that they matter!

Often times Black feel like they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Let them know that you are here to help them carry the load and that it's okay to not be strong all the time. Let them know it is okay to ask for help. Tell them they can do anything they set their mind too. In order to be your best for the world you have to make sure you are okay.

2. Representation is Key

Black youth really don't get a chance to see people who look like them in positions of power or having a successful life. Make sure you provide books, posters, and visual representations of Black people excelling in the world. It lets them know they can break stereotypes and it gives them the confidence that the world has stripped away from them.

3. Be an Advocate for them

By being Black, they are susceptible to discrimination, make sure you stand up for them in these times. They need to know that they have allies and someone who is willing to fight for them. Discrimination can also take place by sympathy instead of empathy. Instead of saying that Black youth are incapable, maybe think about how that young person may not have a great family background or support.
